Dating from as early as 1796, this delightful little treat was originally a time saver in the kitchen. A cup was used to measure the ingredients out instead of a weighing scale. The cup could also be used in the oven. Small sponge cakes cook quicker than large ones and are less likely to burn so you can feast on something delicious in half the time. Hence the name ‘cupcake’ came about. Enjoy!
